One thing's for sure is that you have a faster hard disk/machine than 
mine. My os.stat still shows a significant difference compared to the 
numbers you come out with, even after using your improvements. I'm not 
sure how windows reads files or do a stat(). When doing a stat() I'm 
sure that unix just reads the inodes without even looking at the file 
(I may be wrong). I'm also using a ibook for the tests so who knows 
numbers might be better for linux.

It's been an interesting excercise though :)
