i like 2 and 3, but 1 is a little vague. it asks for a better API, but there 
isn't really definition of "better." should it be redesigned for usability? 
throughput? latency? new functionality?

the criteria you give are good guidelines, but they seem like just guidelines, 
not actual primary goals.

i still think it's a really important project...it just might be 
underspecified.
