If you set the list so that only people who are subscribed can post, then you also have options about what to do with mails from those who aren't subscribed. The setting you probably want is that you hold them for approval. Then a list administrator can approve them, reject them or discard them (reject actually sends a reply, discard is something you might use on spam). One small bit of warning. If you let the hold get above 50 or so messages, Mailman will slow down when going to your list administrative pages. It's not bad at 50.
