Did you add "metadate" to your load_plugins list in the config.py file? I'd double check that you spelled it correctly and that it's "metadate" and not "metadate.py"--I have both problems from time to time depending on how awake I am when I'm futzing with my blog. Also, have you tried running "pyblosxom.cgi" from the command line? That should go through all the plugins you have loaded and make sure they're loading.
