ok. does your hosting provider allow arbitrary outbound connections? more 
likely, is DNS on your hosting provider configured correctly? the akismet 
plugin needs to connect to (and resolve) rest.akismet.com over HTTP. if you 
have a shell account, you can check and see:

this is probably the apache user issue again. as a short-term fix, you can make 
your pyblosxom log's directory world-writable. (ugh, i know.)

the log, once you have it set up.

fortunately, the original package for this plugin does provide a script for 
that. it's just not included in the contributed plugins pack. see:

speaking of which, i didn't do any of the development work on this plugin, i
