My gut feeling is that it sort of corrupts the idea of the path to an 
entry being its location in the filesystem, and so while I could see it 
being useful, I don't really like it.

See now you're restricting the way I'm allowed to name something in two 
different places.  Bleah.  I think that if you're going to assign a 
different meaning to some part of the path (by which I mean "different 
than just another directory in my entries), you should only do it under 
a prefix, a la the tags plugin.

/dev/2003/ is the stuff in the /dev/2003 folder.

The items in the dev/2003 folder created in 2002 (for disambiguation) 
could be:
/archive/2002/dev/2003 , or
/archive/2002?dev/2003 , or
/dev/2003?archive/2002 , or
/archive/2002/entries/dev/2003 .
(This last one is to get around a root directory named "07"...)

Or just disable the archive functionality if there's a directory with 
the same name there, since the contents of the directory will likely be 
the things you'ld return as the archive, and if they're not, then the 
user has chosen to modify them (implicitly, by naming a directory "2003" 
)...
