Will has given a great suggestion for gracefully handling URI's to images especially for those abiding by http://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI for web site architecture.

However, I believe in this instance, you should continue to give the full URI of the image if you wish to have a valid RSS feed.  I do not believe you can have a relative URI in your RSS.
