Flavors not working

I cannot get flavors to work without adding the &flav=... to the request (when I do it works fine). This is happening on two different installations, one OSX 10.2.6, the other on a Linux hosted ISP, both Python 2.2 I believe. I noticed another similar post about this on around 10/25/03, but the only advice was to install 8.1, which I am using. Everything else appears to work fine.
