Problems installing "comments"

So... I followed the instructions in the README.  I copied the 
templates over, checked my permissions, etc etc

It lets me post comments, the comment files show up in the comments 
directory, it emails me when someone posts a comment, but when I look 
at an individual story in the place where the comments are meant to 
show, the static text is there, but none of the template variables have 
been filled.

I tried adding just sticking some other variables into the templates 
($blog_title, for instance) just to see if anything was happening, but 
while anything I put into comment-story.html works, stuff in 
comment.html just doesn't do anything.

Any ideas?

I'm using the latest version of PyBlosxom from sourceforge and the 
comments plugin is from the contrib directory of that distro.
