line count plugin

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out how to write a plugin that counts the number of lines 
in an entry and makes a variable ( $wc ) availiable to the templates with that 
information in it.

Unfortunately I cannot see how to do this. I can tell how to get all the lines 
from a story, but I don't know how to make something availiable to templates.
