So the only place you want num_entries to be 5 is when they're looking at 
the root of your page (http://www.sunsetandlabrea.com/index.py/) and 
that's it?

If that's the case, I would build a plugin that detects this condition and 
sets num_entries to 5 and in all other cases doesn't do anything.  Then 
I'd set num_entries to 100 or something like that in your config.py file.
