Guestbook plugin

I tried to set up the guestbook plugin, but could not get it to work.

I followed the step-by-step instructions in the comments, creating a directory
with the proper permissions, making the flavor file (I wanted to get it working
with just the default form, so I did not make my own form), and putting the
$variable into my head.html. 

There weren't any errors in the apache logs. But, the placeholder was just
replaced with a blank line, no guestbook.

Running ./pyblosxom.cgi indicates that the plugin passes install verification.

Just to test what was going on, I made a template with just the word "foo", so
that "foo" should have been substituted for the placeholder. But again, just
blank space.

This is an otherwise functioning site, with archive, calendar, and my own
delicious plugins working fine. 

Any ideas where to look for what might be wrong? Since there aren't any errors,
I'm at a bit of a loss where to start.
