[Sigia-l] Item Selection/Folder Alternatives

Apologies for cross posting. I have a big list of items that users select from, and some of the customers are pushing for a UI that combines folders with check boxes. I've looked around for alternatives, but the pickins seem surprisingly slim. One alternative I've seen is the iTunes category browser (http://img.brothersoft.com/screenshots/softimage/i/itunes-66443-1.jpeg), but this doesn't seem like much of an improvement for my purposes. Any ideas?
