I don't know about the stone ages - but I certainly like to have all
the assets for a project in one place under some kind of source
control.

For me it makes it much easier to keep everybody involved with the
project up-to-date. It also helps prevent folk getting stuck in silos
where they're working off by themselves and getting off track. By
keeping all the work public everybody can see progress and pitch in
where appropriate.
