The man page is actually wrong, as you discovered, the default mode is
to follow symlinks.  You can have them ignored using "symlinks ignore".

The FTP protocol doesn't actually support any way to create symlinks on
the server, unfortunately, so there is no support for that in sitecopy. 
If there are any FTP-server-specific ways of supporting symlinks I'd be
happy to add support for that, but some quick Googling doesn't reveal
anything.  If anyone finds out anything more about this I'd be
interesting to hear.
