Formatted error log question

This is my first time to post to the list so please forgive me if I'm doing
something wrong.

Here's my question:

I remember reading somewhere about how to log any sitecopy errors and then
run a sed script (I think) on it that will format it nicely and make it
easier to find the errors.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? If so do you know where I'd find
that info? I've looked everywhere but can't find it.
