maybe sitemesh, maybe just a filter

This is just a question for ideas: We have a legacy webapp written in plsql (not important), but which runs via a servlet in a java servlet container v2.3. So far so good. I want to include something extra into the returned pages from the legacy app without having to do it inside the legacy code. So i thought sitemesh. the idea is to put tokens into the html returned by the webapp (a fairly easy part) whihc i then replace with real html before returning to the browser. Correct me if i'm wrong but sitemesh is only going to give me the body whole rather than something more useful.
