Content-Type not setting in v2.2.1

I recently upgraded my dev system from Sitemesh2.0 to 2.2.1. Some pages in my application have the option to render them as an Excell spreadsheet. When I upgraded to 2.2.1, this stopped working, however when I reverted back to 2.0 it started working again. After stepping through the debugger, it seems that PageResponseWrapper.setContentType() has no effect on the servlet response content type. Does anyone know why this?
