repository layout

Folks -- things may evolve (because it is possible to move things
around in Subversion -- yay!) -- but here is the current layout:

  trunk -- the bleeding edge.
  branches/3.4 -- for bug fixes and backports.  Major releases will
      end up here; snapshots of minor releases will go into tags.
  tags -- snapshots of previous releases; do not commit here.  This is 
     also very large and I suggest you don't check it out.
  sandbox -- for personal branches.  Generally speaking it would be a good 
     idea for significant refactoring to be done here and then merged with 
     the trunk.  That will be my practice, anyway.
