Ok this is what it was done: 

1. Rebuilt a machine from scratch, installed FC4. 
2. Ran up2date in all packages (including Python, httpd & postgresql) 

To your questions Jacob:

I would rather not compile python, now that FC4 has great tools such as: yum & up2date.  But I try compiling it and see what the result is. 


To Drew's question:

I built the system from scratch nothing was copied from another linux machine.

in relation to using ODBC and Sybase ASA) if I don't recompile for every
version of the OS I want to use.  I didn't figure this until much later after I
wrote the patch, so you may want to try that too.
