What I see from the SMIL documentation that what is used from CSS2 is:

- positioning
- colours

And a new element introduced (fit).


An implementation that has implemented all tags including CSS2-color and 
cannot handle newly entered values. Since we are not only talking about 
32bit values but also about alternative syntax such as rgba(...). This 
is indeed a problem.

In respect to positioning you have a valid point, especially if 
everything from CSS3 should be supported.

Since CSS3-Color is currently Working Draft, I should not *enforce* 
usage, nor block SMIL 3.0 going to Proposed Recommendation.
But letting my concerns know about adding new things to a standard that 
will be *knowly* deprecated in a new standard (that will again take many 
years to build) would (from my point of view) be valid. But I'm happy to 
wait for 3.X that would be launched after a recommendation for CSS3.
