If people are really looking to do something in this area, I'd suggest
contacting the Vtiger CRM team. vtigercrm is an open-source fork of SugarCRM,
and the upcoming version 5 contains many improvements.

I'm not part of the core developer team, but I work closely with the vtigercrm
community in their public repository:

and they most definitely have an interest in accounting capabilities. Some time
ago, I suggested sql-ledger capabilities as the line at which they should stop
adding accounting functions, and focus on integration.

Not yet announced, but of particular interest to sql-ledger users, postgresql
support has been added to the stable branch, and lands on the main development
trunk in the next few days.

There is a vtigerforge area where PHP or Perl modules that would integrate
vtigercrm with sql-ledger could be maintained and distributed.
