This sounds useful to me as well.  Perhaps a simple
implementation (that does not require another knob) is to follow
the search engine rule--if the string is in quotes, don't use
wildcards. 

Did you submit a wish via the sql ledger web site?  I have found
Mr. S to be responsive to that avenue and it probably get's stuck
in a database somewhere.

I would expect that a wish posted here will get quickly get lost
in life's inexorable shuffle.
