I'm ambivalent. If implementers want to focus on improving gradient
rendering everywhere instead of adding multiple rendering options, and
believe that it can be done without performance trade-offs, that sounds
good to me.  Particular rendering options like dithering could be left up
to the implementation, with graphics software for print being more likely
to benefit from them.
