Ok i now have what seems to me, to be a fairly minimal but functional 
and validating atom feed. I ended up adding a libxslt extension function
to help in formatting the feed a little. The results of this effort can 
be found here:

Anyways, it ended up being very trivial i just don't know xml/xsl-t very 
well so slow going on pretty obvious stuff i think.
