NIck has rightly brought up the commercial and domestic aspects where IMHO the real browser market exists. Where an organisation the size of BA has made commercial decisions about points for disconnecting or adding browse support there has been some consideration of universality. Whilst I understand a geek position that is in their own capable hands. It seems to me, however, that the 'granny' aspect is important, where granny ages range from 1 to 111. To cope with this more has to be done than make browsers downloadable by offering a simple programmed download service through ISPs using a sniffer to determine the current browser and a simple option to replace their jaded browser without too much technical detail in the surface proposition but with more detail in the drill down. Perhaps a question such as "You are using a browser which restricts what you are able to do. Would you like your browser to be updated to give you better access for free?" Y/N and repeating the message until agreement is reached. On agreement the granny would be asked to wait (go and make a cup of tea) whilst the change is made and the 'restart' message is displayed. There is a good deal of techno-FUD based on comfort in sticking with what is known so the users need encouraging by making upgrades as simple as possible.
