The things that would guide me are
1) Narrative: What are the stories that users want to tell and what are you prepared to let them!
2) Complexity Constraints: Like Haiku, Twitter requires brevity, but this in turn makes it easier for the user to generate content?
3) Risk: What are the risks to the contributor if they overstate, make an error or exceed the norms for eg rudeness
4) Reward: Different types of esteem, indirect payment, direct payment
5) Originality: to what extent do you require them to own all of the IP of that which they post. YouTube is a case in point - by being apparently lax in enforcing their quite strict-sounding copyright regulations, they probably attracted much more content. Ultimately they were required to pay royalties to the copyright owners - yet they do this via a blanket license rather than the previous norm: individual negotiation for every clip.

Although these don't look like comparable difficulties to your answer v post example, or the tortuous process of geotagging a group of flickr images, it feels like underlying motivators.

Subject: Relative difficulty of creation

Hi list members,

While researching approaches to lower the threshold of content production in applications driven by user contributions I was wondering whether research in the relative difficulty of creating content exists.
"Relative difficulty of creation" relates to the question what kind of tasks a user regards as more difficult than another. e.g. is it more difficult for a user to answer a question or to post it?
This relative difficulty might be specific to a particular user, so how can I asses it?
Are there any concepts old or new out there that would dare to create a hierarchy of relative difficulty?
