Putting metacharacters in filenames is asking for trouble from other
systems that manipulate referenced documents.  Eliminating characters
that are commonly significant to software like:

    [](){}\/!"'?*|

is probably wise.

However, whatever recommendations are made should be aware of
internationalisation issues - [a-z0-9_]+ may be an acceptable
restriction for English sites, but is too narrow even for other Western
European languages, let alone those that don't use ISO8859-15.
