Except, XHTML (especially 1.1) is arguably worse than HTML, as recent
articles[1] have described (I don't entirely agree with them, I tend to
serve XHTML as application/xhtml+xml to UAs that request it but
text/html to the rest).

XHTML 1.1 (of which there is only one version btw, no transitional or
strict) is strongly recommended to be served with the "proper" MIME
types, and can cause problems with IE/win (1.1-compliant image maps
are impossible to pull off in it, for example).
