Does the OS version affect performance numbers?

I wanted to simulate the bake-off as closely as possible as a means of
verifying my test setup, so I'll use FreeBSD 2.2.8 if it will affect the
performs of the test.  Thanks you. I was wondering if using FreeBSD 3.0
would affect the performance numbers I get? Thanks in advance.
