memtest86 is a very good memory tester for "x86" hardware, OS independent. 
(well, no OS required, runs standalone).

And as Alex mentioned, running a large compile batch is also a good stress 
test or memory and busses. If the compile fails at some stage but works 
if resumed then there is very likely hardware error somewhere..
