Well, I ran “convmv” today, so all filenames is supposed to be utf8 now.

However when I set Webmin to UTF-8, it is not displaying characters corretly

As a work-around for this, the next Webmin release will not crash if a filename contains un-parseable UTF-8 characters. I'm at a loss to figure out what the correct encoding of an arbitrary filename is though :-(

It sits on a network share, originally an NFS-share but now a Samba share.

The directory was probably created from a Windows-Machine with the share mounted.

How was this problem directory created in the first place? I think the issue here is that the directory on the filesystem is not using UTF-8 encoding, but Webmin expects it to be.

I was able to-produce this by creating a directory in non-UTF-8 mode and then switching to a UTF-8 encoding. However, removing that directory and re-creating it worked fine.

The underlying issue is that a Unix filename has no way (that I know of) for it's encoding to be specified :-(

utf8 "\xE4" does not map to Unicode at /usr/lib/perl5/Encode.pm line 174.

Lang is set for “Swedish (SV.UTF-8)”

When I set it for only “Swedish”, characters are displayed correctly, but the same error message appears

Hi Tomas,

Can you try upgrading to the 1.790 version of Webmin from http://www.webmin.com/devel.html ? I don't see a problem with filenames like that on my test system, but that may be because I already fixed the issue.

Hi Tomas,

A couple of people have reported this, but unfortunately I haven't been able to re-produce it!

Which Linux distribution are you using there? Also, can you give an example of a non-english directory name?

I have serious problems with the new File-Manager.

It does not recognize any files or folders containing non-English letters.

System is set to sv_SE.UTF-8 Webmin set to the same, still no go.

It shows the files and directory’s but when trying to open them it says that they don’t exist.

Thankfully the old Java-based is still there.

Another thing, the search function only searches in the current directory as far as I can see and not in sub-dirs.
