There is a partial solution, which I am using. I needed to run a substantial package that required something later than PHP 5.3. I found this reference about running multiple versions of PHP. I installed 5.5 (with some difficulty getting all of the required modules).

I am unaware of any similar support for multiple versions of MySQL, however.
