Running JC as an applet

As of WO5.2, Apple say they have withdrawn support for running Java Client 
apps as an applet though they don't give a convincing reason why this is. 
We run ours via Java Web Start. A client has asked me if it can be run via 
an applet. Does anyone have any experience of doing so and the pros/cons 
other than the obvious one of having to download the class files whenever 
the app is run?
