It's really not that bad. The Tenderloin is kind of a surprise if you've been wandering around the tourist destinations in SF. It's not a pleasant place -- dirty, run down, lots of people you'd rather not do business with. If you have been in major cities in the U.S. you know not to flash your wallet around and to ignore people who approach you on the street. The one thing I do caution people visiting SF about is that, while it often seems genteel and picturesque (especially in the summer when the weather is nice), it's crime rate, as far as I know, is pretty much the same as that of any other major U.S. city. So you want to watch your bag, keep your wallet in a safe pocket, don't leave anything very expensive in your hotel room, and think defensively.
