The reason that I wanted to do this is so that I could use add some 
additional qualifiers 'on the fly' for to-many relationships (for 
example, restricting a fetched to-many array to only include items that 
were created after a certain date).

Can't use categories - I'm on WO 5.2.1 (sorry, should have said that in 
the post).
