I think this is a great idea and I suggested it to Apple as well (although I was hoping for an amount around the current license fee). Unfortunately, as you suggest, I don't think Apple is keen to do anything that doesn't support Mac sales (now that they can offer the server-side hardware to run WebObjects on). I'm also unsure if current (or future) sales would cover the cost of support for other platforms.
