OK I've got more on this.

After my recent problems running WO on WinXP I tried to put WO on a
Win2K machine, which has Windows security updates up to KB912919
(current as of 27/1/2006)

I installed WO 5.2, and applied the 5.2.4 patch.  I kept the PATH
environment variable small to avoid the overrun problem.

When all was installed I found the same problem - the WO tools (e.g.
EOModeler) won't run.  The splash screen appears and then hangs.

Specifically I notice that the pbs.exe task doesn't run.  This is one
of the two tasks WO puts in the startup folder.  If I try to run it
explicitly, it disappears after a few moments.

After a bit of googling I notice that the pbs.exe (Paintboard Server)
issue has come up a number of times before with previous WO versions
and patches.  Indeed I believe I had this problem before (on XP) just
before the 5.2.4 patch came out, and solved by it.

I've tried ensuring that the tasks aren't running while installing the
patch, in case there's a locking problem, but to no avail.

Any ideas?  Apart from the obvious buying a Mac that is!

BTW I realise this may not be suitable for the Newbies group, but the
Yahoo WO group seems to be refusing posts with nothing new on it for
many months.  Anybody know what's happening there?  Or are all these
groups just succumbing to the increasing levels of spam?
