I don't recall the details, but I remember having troubles with that layout.
Why don't you update just the errors display? 
Like this:

	<WOTextField  id="bar"/>
       < AjaxObserveField observeFieldID="bar" updateContainerID="foo">

< AjaxUpdateContainer id="foo">
	<if condition = bar_has_invalid_value>
		<displayErrors />
	</if>

</AjaxUpdateContainer>

After all, the text field usually requires no updating...
