I didn't really choose 8888, it's the default port number assigned to the GWT Dev Mode in Eclipse, could be almost any other port really.
I worked with GWT in the past. It's a great framework supported by Google which allows you to write powerful web application while staying away from javascript. Recently there was some uncertainty concerning Google future plans for GWT, but there were some good news at Google IO 2013 (https://developers.google.com/events/io/sessions/327833110) and it looks that they still want to invest in this technology.
I played a little bit with Vaadin (Vaadin looks great!!!), Sencha GXT or SmartGWT which are all derived from GWT, but these are only partially open source technologies and some are server side deployed in servlet containers, so I've decided to use plain GWT for now.

The GWT dev client has to run on a different port than my ERRest application which violates the same origin policy. At the moment I'm only able to work if I disable browser security. So I thought it would be great if I could "just" use JSONP and forget about it!

I found some information here http://lists.apple.com/archives/webobjects-dev/2012/Jul/msg00184.html and there https://github.com/jtayler/wonder, but I'm not sure if the implementation is complete and how it can be use.
