I just grep'd again through the openssl distribution, and there is no
mention of the environment variables in any of the documentation, just
in the code itself. The only documentation that mentions the environment
variables that I know of is the (mostly obsolete) FAQ for SSLeay and
SSLapps at "http://www2.psy.uq.edu.au/~ftp/Crypto/" (section 28).
