About escaping words and urls

Hi all,
I need to make strings I escape with '~' character to be displayed with a specific css class.
I'm searching for the piece of code that decides whether to link or not (escaped strings). Can't find out from where it is done !
Can any body point me on something ?

This needed in wysiwyg edition mode to know if some words were escaped in order to prefix them with Phpwiki escape char when converting back to wikitext syntax (performing a preview or save action).
