Thanks for your help.
We are now trying to use dictfmt, but it does not seem to function properly. We
have been testing the port package available on FreeBSD and rpm package on
Mandrake 10.1, but none is actually doing anything. It starts and runs for hours
generating just the two empty files *.dict and *.index. On mandrake the .index
file contained a couple of 00-database--... headers and that's it. We were
trying this on a file we got by decompressing world CIA factbook 1995 with
dictzip. We tried all available dicfmt options (-c5,-f,-e,-h,-j,-p) and none
works :(
Have you experienced anything like this? What could we do?

We have an assignment: to make a web application that allows students to build
dictionaries. At first their vocabulary will be stored in MySQL database and
then we would like to format data nightly into DICT databases. We are using PHP.
