I learned now that my systems default character set is set to utf-8
not ISO-8859-1 (output of 'locale') (RH Enterprise).

I did not find out until now how I could handle this in a smart way.
I do not understand why wml (subst) is not working correctly (or does
it?) with utf-8.

If anybody has a quick fix I'd been very thankful.
