In my particular case that's not a problem. I simply re-use sys.path
from the running interpreter, which is good enough. Something like this:

cmd = 'PYTHONPATH="%s" %s setup.py --long-description' % (
   sys.executable, ':'.join(sys.path))
status, output = commands.getstatusoutput(cmd)
