Something of a meta-comment on this thread: It sounds like people are broadly in agreement on the direction, but not communicating enough about what's actually going on. I think it would be useful to keep some kind of roadmap wiki on zope.org, or at least post to the list periodically saying, "this is what we're about to start doing".
