I released persistent 4.0.0 today to PyPI:

 http://pypi.python.org/pypi/persistent

and updated my ZODB branch to use it

 http://svn.zope.org/ZODB/branches/tseaver-persistent_as_egg/?rev=127487&view=rev

At this point, I believe my branch is ready to merge to the trunk.
