Well Zope 3 really has a storage framework - the ZODB :-) Even Philip
based PEAK's storage layer (which is a much simpler incarnation of
ZPatterns) on ZODB's DataManager and he evens calls it a DataManager
(not SpecialistRackThingyMajig ;-) ). It should be entirely possible to
adapt a container in Zope3 to a SQLDataManager or a
LDAPplusSQLDataManager or WhateverYouLikeDatamanager.

I once tried to work out something like references (called Associations)
with Shane Hathaway for Zope3 but it never became anything:

The one thing that was interesting about it was that it was based on
associations in the OMG's MOF (Meta Object Facility) model. It might be
worth considering some of these ideas when building a reference engine
for Zope3.
