I think that might be the problem ;-)  - that it builds on an 
advanced concept, how fine that may ever be:

When I look at the proposals as well as current implementations 
(SchoolTool, cpsskins, rdflib/zematic) of 
reference/relation/association frameworks for Zope 3 I get the 
impression that there are as much concepts (like MOF, formal 
logic, relational algebra, ...) out there as people designing or 
developing such stuff.

The strength of the Archetypes reference engine is that it does 
not care about such concepts (at least that's my impression), it 
just offers a way (a really simple and convenient API) to 
connect objects.

You can then build higher-level stuff on top of this, like e.g. 
the Relations product for Plone/Archetypes.

This was the reason why I recently produced another proposal 
(http://www.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Projects/ComponentArchitecture/BasicRelationAPI 
- still draft) for providing such a low-level relation API. 
(There is also a proof-of-concept implementation available 
already.)

I think such a low-level API could provide a bridge between the 
implementations (that should be pluggable - here the strengths 
of Zope 3 come in) and higher-level frameworks based on advanced 
concepts.
