all the manage_after* hooks are all deprecated as it is, so we have to 
figure out some way to do this soon.

events offer the ability to defer indexing on an event by event basis, 
ability defer indexing to the transaction boundary. and so on.

The general consensus (unless I have the wrong impression) is that some 
sort of event driven solution is the way to go.   Regardless of how 
fixed the situation is today.
